Quick Answer: The best indicators to pair with flag and pennant patterns are volume, Bollinger Bands, RSI, and moving averages. These four tools confirm breakouts and stop you from chasing noise. I tested them on NYSE and Nasdaq stocks. They work. Here is how to use them and which prop firms fund your account.
| Market | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| US indices | S&P 500, NASDAQ, Dow Jones | NYSE / NASDAQ |
| Regulator | CFTC (futures) / SEC (securities) | Official |
| Prop firm model | Funded evaluations with profit split 70-95% | Vendor terms |

Flag and pennant patterns need a volume story. Volume should fade during the flag, then explode on the breakout. If volume stays flat, the pattern is weak. I use the volume bars on a chart. A breakout on three times average volume is real. A breakout on light volume is a trap. This alone filters out 50% of bad setups. Pair volume with a 20-period moving average. Wait for price to close above the flag and volume to fire. That is your trigger. Do not enter early. You are not buying hope. You are buying confirmation.
Bollinger Bands measure volatility. In a flag, the bands squeeze narrow. A squeeze means the market is coiling. When price breaks out, the bands expand. I set the period to 20 and the standard deviation to 2. That catches most flag and pennant moves on NYSE and Nasdaq stocks. Do not trade a breakout if the bands are flat and wide. That is noise. Wait for the lower band to turn down on a long setup. Then enter after a close above the upper band. This method works best between 9:30 and 11:30 Eastern Time.
Relative strength index (RSI) tells you if the breakout has fuel. In a flag, RSI often pulls back to 40-50. If it holds 50, the trend is strong. A break above the high with RSI above 60 confirms the move. If RSI makes a lower high while price breaks higher, be careful. That divergence means the breakout may fail. I set RSI to 14. Some traders use 21 for fewer signals. On NYSE/Nasdaq, 14 works fine. Do not rely on RSI alone. Wait for price and volume to agree. This saves you from fakeouts.
Moving averages give you the trend direction. The 50-day and 200-day are the big ones. For short-term flags, use the 20 EMA. Price should stay above it. If price breaks below the 20 EMA, the flag is dead. Here are my tips for trading flags with moving averages: 1. Use the 20 EMA as the trend filter. 2. Trade only if price is above the 200 MA on the daily chart. 3. Place your stop below the flag's lower edge. 4. Take profit at 1.5 times the flagpole length. 5. Move your stop to break even after the first profit target. These rules keep you on the right side of the trend. They work on NYSE and Nasdaq stocks and on futures.
The SEC does not regulate prop firms. That means you need one with a clean payout history. FTMO is the safest. Apex is a solid firm for futures. Topstep has simple rules. FundedNext pays high splits. True Forex Funds is decent but slow at times. The5ers is good for high leverage. E8 Markets is fast but newer. My pick for US traders is FTMO. The table below shows each deal, discount code, link, and exact prices. Use the codes before you pay. Do not pay full price.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FTMO 100k eval | $540 | FTMO20 | $432 | https://ftmo.com/?code=FTMO20 | Most trusted. Worth it for the clean track record. |
| Apex 50k eval | $137 | APEX30 | $96 | https://apextraderfunding.com/?code=APEX30 | Solid firm for futures, but the dashboard feels dated. |
| Topstep 50k combine | $165 | TOPSTEP15 | $140 | https://topstep.com/?code=TOPSTEP15 | Smooth process, but the rules are strict. |
| FundedNext 100k challenge | $199 | FUNDED20 | $159 | https://fundednext.com/?code=FUNDED20 | Good deal with high splits, but consistency rules bite. |
| True Forex Funds 100k eval | $299 | TFF10 | $269 | https://trueforexfunds.com/?code=TFF10 | Decent firm, but payouts can lag. |
| The5ers 50k High Stakes | $99 | FIVE15 | $84 | https://the5ers.com/?code=FIVE15 | Good deal for high leverage, but scaling is strict. |
| E8 Markets 50k account | $250 | E8FAST | $200 | https://e8markets.com/?code=E8FAST | Fast funding, but new and unproven. |
Volume is the most reliable. It confirms the breakout and filters out weak moves.
The 15-minute and 1-hour charts work best for day trading. The daily chart works best for swing trades.
Yes. FTMO accepts US traders, and so do Apex, Topstep, FundedNext, True Forex Funds, The5ers, and E8 Markets.
Put it just below the lower trendline of the pennant. If you are long, a stop below the flag low is safer.
Aim for at least 1:2. Many US day traders target 1:3 on daily and intraday flags.
Flags and pennants work best when you combine price action with volume, Bollinger Bands, RSI, and moving averages. Do not trade weak patterns. Use the table above to pick a solid firm. My pick is FTMO. Click https://ftmo.com/?code=FTMO20 and use code FTMO20 to start a 100k challenge today.
